lumi. Terms of Service — plain-English terms covering what the service is, what it isn't, how AI content works, and your rights as a user.

Terms of service
Last updated: July 2026  ·  SJB Creative Studio Ltd, England and Wales  ·  ICO: C1973098
These terms cover what lumi. is, what it isn't, and what you can expect from it. They're written to be read, not to hide anything. By using lumi., you agree to these terms. If anything here raises a question, get in touch before you continue.
1 — What lumi. is

lumi. is a personal journalling tool. It lets you record voice notes, and uses AI to transcribe them, identify patterns, and produce reflective summaries — anchored to the life areas and goals you set during onboarding. The purpose is reflection, not advice.

lumi. is operated by SJB Creative Studio Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, trading as lumi. Contact: lumi.journalling@gmail.com. ICO registration number: C1973098.

lumi. is a personal journalling and reflection service available to registered users. Features may change from time to time as the product develops.

1a — What lumi. is not
Important — please read this

lumi. is not a mental health service, therapy tool, crisis service, counselling platform, or substitute for professional support of any kind. It is a journalling and reflection tool. No therapeutic relationship is formed through using lumi. Nothing in the app — including AI-generated summaries, pattern alerts, sentiment scores, or any other output — constitutes medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or need professional support, please contact a qualified professional or a crisis service directly.

2 — Acceptable use

lumi. is intended for personal journalling use only and is available to users aged 18 and over only. By using lumi., you confirm you are 18 or older and agree that you will not:

  • Use the app for any commercial purpose without prior written permission
  • Upload content that is illegal, that infringes third-party rights, or that constitutes harassment or abuse
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, copy, or misappropriate lumi.'s AI prompts, design, or underlying systems
  • Use the app in a way that knowingly misrepresents your identity or circumstances

Audio recordings must be in a supported format (mp3, mp4, m4a, wav, webm, ogg, or flac) and under 25MB per file.

Your lumi. account is personal to you. Sharing your account credentials with others is not permitted.

3 — AI-generated content

Many features in lumi. are powered by AI — including entry transcription, sentiment and energy scoring, life area tagging, daily questions, weekly signals, monthly summaries, pattern alerts, and the voice and writing profile. These outputs are generated by third-party AI models and are provided for reflective purposes only.

AI content limitations

AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or not representative of your actual state, intentions, or experience. Specifically: sentiment and energy ratings are AI assessments, not clinical evaluations; pattern alerts are triggered algorithmically when an intention has gone unaddressed for 21 days — they are not personalised recommendations; monthly summaries are AI interpretations and may not accurately reflect what you experienced; and the voice and writing profile is a statistical model that may not accurately represent you as a person. Do not rely on any AI-generated content in lumi. for medical, psychological, legal, financial, or other professional decisions.

4 — Safety system

lumi. includes an automated distress detection system that runs on your journal entry transcripts before they are processed by AI. This is a keyword pattern-matching system — not clinical assessment, not AI analysis, and not human review.

It operates across three levels:

  • Active tier — if explicit crisis language is detected (such as expressions of suicidal ideation or self-harm intent), AI analysis is skipped entirely for that entry and hardcoded crisis support resources are shown.
  • Concern tier — if explicit hopelessness is detected (without self-harm language), AI analysis runs normally but a warm check-in and soft signposting to support resources is shown.
  • Passive tier — if general distress language is detected and the AI also independently rates the entry as heavy, a check-in prompt is shown offering access to support resources.
What the safety system does not do

The safety system does not contact emergency services, alert any third party, or provide crisis intervention or counselling. It does not guarantee detection of all distress signals — it is a keyword system with known false positive and false negative risk. lumi. does not routinely review journal entries as part of normal operation. The resources shown are hardcoded external links — they are not personalised to you. If you are in crisis, contact emergency services (999 or 112) or Samaritans (116 123, free, 24/7) directly. Do not rely on lumi. as a crisis resource.

5 — No professional advice

Nothing in lumi. — including AI-generated content, pattern alerts, reflective questions, summaries, or any other feature — constitutes professional advice of any kind. This includes mental health advice, medical advice, psychological guidance, legal advice, and financial advice.

lumi. is a private reflection tool operated by SJB Creative Studio Ltd trading as lumi. lumi. is not a mental health professional, doctor, counsellor, solicitor, or financial adviser. If you need professional support in any of these areas, please seek it from a qualified professional.

6 — Third-party services

lumi. relies on the following third-party services to function. By using lumi., you acknowledge that your data will be processed by these services as described in the Privacy Policy, and you agree to comply with their respective terms of use.

The Google Calendar integration is optional. If connected, lumi. requests read-only access to your calendar events, which are used only to provide context in monthly AI summaries. You can disconnect at any time from Settings. Disconnecting does not delete previously synced events from the database.

7 — Subscription, pricing, and billing

lumi. offers a free tier and a paid subscription tier called lumi. Pro. All new accounts receive a 30-day trial with all features unlocked before being moved to the free tier or upgrading to Pro.

Tiers at a glance

Free tier — voice capture, transcription, entry review, life areas, up to 3 active goals, and one monthly summary per calendar month (minimum 5 entries). Free forever.

lumi. Pro — £10/month — everything in the free tier, plus daily questions, weekly signals, pattern alerts, goal journey view, goal actions, goal trajectory, voice profile, and the Sessions module. Unlimited active goals.

30-day trial — every new account receives a full 30-day trial with all Pro features unlocked. No payment required to start. At day 30, accounts without a payment method move automatically to the free tier.

Trial period. Your 30-day trial begins at account creation. All features are unlocked during the trial at no charge. Three days before the trial ends, you will receive a reminder by email and in the app. If you do not add a payment method before the trial ends, your account moves automatically to the free tier. Nothing you recorded or generated during the trial is deleted.

Free tier. The free tier is a permanent product, not a time-limited demo. You can use lumi. on the free tier indefinitely. Certain features are unavailable on the free tier — these are listed in the app. The free tier allows a maximum of 3 active goals. Goals created during the trial that exceed this limit are automatically set to Paused on downgrade; you can choose which 3 to keep active.

lumi. Pro subscription. lumi. Pro is a monthly recurring subscription of £10/month, billed in GBP. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe. By subscribing, you authorise lumi. to charge your payment method on a monthly basis until you cancel. Prices may change with 30 days' notice.

Founding member pricing. The first 50 subscribers are eligible for a founding member rate of £5/month, applied for the lifetime of their subscription via a promotional code at checkout. This offer is subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time once the 50-subscription limit is reached.

Cancellation. You can cancel your lumi. Pro subscription at any time via the Subscription section in Settings, which opens Stripe's customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You retain Pro access until that date, then move to the free tier. No refunds are issued for partial billing periods.

Payment failure. If a payment fails, lumi. Pro remains active for a 7-day grace period while the payment is retried. If payment is not recovered within 7 days, your account moves to the free tier. You will be notified by email at each stage. You can update your payment details at any time via the Stripe customer portal in Settings.

Past data on downgrade. When moving from Pro to the free tier — whether at trial end, cancellation, or payment failure — nothing you recorded or generated is deleted. Past summaries, entries, signals, questions, and session notes remain readable. Pro-gated features stop generating new content but historical content remains accessible.

Refunds. lumi. does not offer refunds for unused subscription periods except where required by applicable law. If you believe you have been charged in error, contact lumi. at lumi.journalling@gmail.com.

Payment processing. All payments are processed by Stripe. lumi. does not store or have access to your payment card details. By subscribing, you also agree to Stripe's terms of service.

8 — Service availability and limitation of liability

lumi. is provided as-is, without any guarantee of availability, accuracy, or continuity. lumi. makes no warranty — express or implied — about the service's fitness for any particular purpose. In particular: lumi. does not guarantee any minimum uptime; the service may be unavailable during maintenance, updates, or due to third-party service disruptions; no guaranteed support response times are offered; and features may change or be removed from time to time.

lumi. depends on third-party APIs, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Groq. If Anthropic is unavailable, AI processing will fail. For transcription, lumi. will automatically fall back to Groq's Whisper service if OpenAI is unavailable — reducing (but not eliminating) the risk of transcription failure during an outage. Entry processing is asynchronous — there may be a delay between submitting a recording and the entry being fully processed. Entries may temporarily show a processing or error status.

If transcription fails, your audio file is retained for up to 24 hours with automatic retries every 30 minutes. This gives lumi. the best chance of recovering your recording during a temporary outage. After 24 hours, the file is auto-deleted regardless of whether transcription succeeded. If the server restarts and the file is lost before that window closes, the recording may not be recoverable.

Limitation of liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes lumi.'s liability for: death or personal injury caused by negligence; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable law.

Subject to the above, and to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, lumi. is not liable for indirect, consequential, or incidental losses; loss of data; loss of access; or inaccurate AI output arising from your use of the service. lumi.'s total liability to you for any claim arising from these terms or your use of the service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total subscription fees paid by you to lumi. in the 6 months preceding the claim, or (b) £50.

Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected by these terms.

9 — Your content and intellectual property

Your journal entries belong to you. lumi. does not claim ownership over anything you write, record, or reflect on through the app.

AI-generated content — including summaries, signals, questions, pattern alerts, and the voice and writing profile — is derived from your own entries and is provided to you for personal use.

By using lumi., you grant lumi. a limited licence to process your content as necessary to provide the service — including transmitting it to the third-party services listed above. This licence does not extend to any other use.

10 — Account deletion and data

You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. Account deletion removes your data from lumi.'s active systems — all entries, summaries, sessions, goals, intentions, life areas, voice profile, and account data. Your Clerk account is also deleted at the same time. Residual encrypted copies held in Google Drive backups are purged within 7 days. Deleted data cannot be recovered from active systems.

The most recent Google Drive backup(s) may persist for up to 7 days after deletion before being automatically pruned. If you have concerns about this, contact lumi. before deleting your account.

There is no recovery after deletion. Please be certain before proceeding.

11 — Account suspension and termination

lumi. reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access to the service at any time if lumi. reasonably believes you have breached these terms, are misusing the service, or if continued access creates legal, safety, or operational risk.

Grounds for suspension or termination include but are not limited to: providing false information during account creation; using the app for commercial purposes without permission; attempting to reverse-engineer lumi.'s systems; harassing or abusing the service; or any other breach of the acceptable use terms in section 2.

Where possible, lumi. will notify you before taking action and give you an opportunity to address the issue. In cases involving safety, illegal activity, or serious misuse, lumi. may act without prior notice.

If your account is terminated for a breach of these terms and you hold a lumi. Pro subscription, no refund will be issued for the remaining subscription period. If lumi. terminates your account for reasons other than a breach of these terms, a pro-rata refund of any prepaid subscription fees will be offered.

You may close your account at any time via Settings. See section 10 for the effect of account deletion on your data.

12 — Changes to the service and these terms

lumi. is in active development. Features may be added, changed, or removed from time to time. You will be notified in advance of any changes that materially affect your use of the service or your personal data.

These terms may also change. If they change in a material way, you will be notified within the app. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent update. Continued use of lumi. after a change to the terms constitutes acceptance of those changes.

13 — Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from your use of lumi. will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

14 — Questions

If you have any questions about these terms, please get in touch before using the service.
